Waste Management

At Transocean we strive to reduce the levels of waste we produce and increase recycling across our company, both onshore and offshore. We adopt a cradle-to-grave approach where we verify the waste that leaves our rig and track it to its final disposal or recycling point.

We have a comprehensive audit and assessment program that monitors our waste management facilities for their compliance with our company standards and all regulatory standards. This approach ensures that our waste is being managed responsibly throughout the cycle.

Rigs across our fleet perform a large degree of waste segregation and recycling of products offshore, including paper, cardboard, metal, plastic and oil. We track the waste we produce, log the levels we recycle and, where possible, track the waste to shore-based disposal sites or recycling plants. By monitoring the levels of recycling, we gain a benchmark for improving our performance, while continuing to work on reducing the materials we use and the waste we produce.
We are involved in a number of waste initiatives across our company. A few of these projects are listed below.

Total Waste Management in Egypt

Transocean has developed a local partnership with ITS Drilling Services in Egypt to establish an advanced waste management program that starts on the rig and ends up with local recycling, disposal tracking and a full cradle-to-grave process. All of our rigs have a color-coded, waste-segregation scheme inside and outside the accommodation that facilitates the segregation of everything possible, from metals, plastics, paper, rubber and wood to hazardous materials. These color-coded streams from all ten of our rigs in Egypt are then collected onshore and sent to a number of ITS sites for processing. These sites include recycling of plastics and metal, disposal and re-use of oils, and tracked landfill of a small amount of domestic waste. Transocean controls the process from start to finish and obtains a copy of the final receipt documenting disposal of every waste stream. This is a part of our commitment to being a responsible company and raising the environmental standards in our areas of operation. Our efforts in Egypt are not isolated, and similar programs are in place across our entire company.

 Recycle the Gulf Initiative

Recycle The Gulf® is a complete recycling program that entails collecting waste and sorting it into commodity categories including cans, plastics, paper and cardboard. Separating waste at the source is "the heart and soul” of recycling.

Under the program we remove recyclables from their waste stream, sort and compact them on the rig for shipment to the rig's dock facility along with compacted bags of waste. The bags of compacted recyclables are periodically delivered to Tech Oil Products. The recyclables are tracked so that each rig's contributions can be reported.

The recyclable commodities are donated to ARC of Iberia, a recycling center that employs mentally and physically challenged adults, where they are processed for sale. The program is a win-win scenario for all involved, which includes the following components:

  • Recycle The Gulf® is a complete recycling program!
  • Equipment utilized offshore for separation and compaction of recyclables.
  • A training program for offshore personnel.
  • Green colored bags differentiate recyclable materials from white waste bags.
  • A bag identification system tracks the compacted recyclables to their point of origin.
  • Storage bins placed at your dock facility store the compacted bags until pickup.
  • Empty storage bins are available to bring back to your dock when a full bin of recyclables is dropped off to be inventoried.
  • A tracking system enables reporting to participating companies on recyclables returned to the dock, and an award system generates and maintains enthusiasm.
  • A commitment to involve the mentally and physically challenged adults of ARC to benefit their lives.
