Safety Leadership Training (SLT)

SLT is the training tool used throughout the company to teach and re-enforce the correct use of Transocean's safety tools in innovative ways with group and individual training components.

Group Component

The group component teaches a core group of offshore supervisors and on-shore personnel to cascade safety leadership to every member of their team. This “train the trainer” approach combined with unique materials enables training to be effectively delivered.

Developed in house by the QHSE team, the course incorporates a unique blend of behavioral-based safety management tools designed to increase hazard awareness and risk perception (Transocean calls this process THINK) alongside an active safety observation and monitoring process we call START (see more below).  The two systems combine to teach individuals at any level in the organization how to plan their work and monitor progress to ensure it is done safely and correctly.

Rather than focusing only on theory, the SLT course provides real-life examples of real people who have used the processes to great effect, as well as examples of what happens when the processes are not used correctly.  The SLT group training provides confidence and training to core people who can then cascade the right knowledge to their immediate team, while being part of the team itself. What better ways to ensure success than being part of the process from start to finish?

Individual Component

Once a person has been through the SLT course, they make SLT material available on DVD-Rom to every other member of their team to review, follow and then provide feedback. Next, this theory can be demonstrated on deck or in the office using practical scenarios and drills. These innovative methods ensure that Safety Leadership is cascaded to everyone with clear expectations that Transocean personnel are accountable for their actions as safety leaders. There is no short cut to achieving our safety vision.

The common theme of these components is leaders' ability to interact and manage their people.  Knowing people, their abilities and personalities and being able to communicate expectations to them is critical to achieving desired results, which is at the core of the QHSE safety leadership program.

THINK Planning Process

The THINK planning process is a simple, consistent and systematic method used by Transocean personnel to apply risk management concepts in their task planning.  A suitable plan with a risk assessment and appropriate controls must be confirmed in place, prior to all tasks. The intent of this is to ensure that hazards are identified and risks are effectively managed and controlled at all times.

We effectively identify hazards by making a conscious decision to ask “what if?” Asking “what if?” improves our ability to anticipate and observe for hazardous situations.

The THINK Planning process is used in task planning to:

  • Plan the task
  • Identify the hazards.
  • Assess the likelihood and consequence of the possible incident
  • Reduce the risk by applying preventive and mitigating controls.

The THINK Plan is risk management plus task planning!

START (See, Think, Act, Reinforce, Track)

START is a process used by Transocean to observe and monitor work practices, plans and workplace conditions. It is the responsibility of all personnel to participate by personally performing START observations daily. We use the START process to demonstrate personal commitment to achieving, and in many cases maintaining, an incident-free workplace.

The intent of the START policy is to prevent people from being injured, through observing and monitoring tasks and work practices to identify hazards, reinforce safe behavior and correct at risk behavior to achieve desired results. START promotes effective conversations about safety. Having effective conversations requires you to speak, listen and understand.
