Transocean Support in Deepwater Horizon Incident

May 3, 2010

Transocean is continuing coordination with involved governmental agencies and BP in the ongoing efforts to control the flow of oil in Mississippi Canyon block 252 of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.  Transocean has also initiated an investigation of the Deepwater Horizon incident of April 20, 2010.

Transocean teams, including operations and engineering experts, continue to provide support in the Unified Command in Robert, Louisiana, as well as in Houma, Louisiana, and offices of BP and Transocean in Houston, Texas. These efforts include using ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) to stop the flow of oil and operating two Transocean ultra-deepwater drilling rigs for relief efforts.

The Transocean ultra-deepwater semisubmersible rig Development Driller III has begun operations for drilling a relief well. A relief well is designed to drill down and intersect the existing well bore, and pump heavy fluids and cement in to kill the well. In addition, the Transocean drillship Discoverer Enterprise is preparing to conduct recovery operations for BP, using a specially-built “cofferdam” or “dome” at the sea floor, with a connecting system to flow leaking oil into the 125,000-barrel storage tanks on the drillship. The plan involves “off-loading” the recovered oil onto another vessel for transportation to shore.
