Firsts

Since launching the offshore drilling industry's first jackup drilling rig in 1954, Transocean has achieved a long history of technological "firsts." These innovations include:

  • First offshore jackup drilling rig
  • First self-propelled jackup
  • First turret-moored drillship
  • First dynamically positioned drillship for exploration
  • First dynamically positioned semisubmersible
  • First fourth-generation semisubmersible
  • First rig to drill year-round in the North Sea
  • First semisubmersible for sub-Arctic, year-round operations in the Barents Sea
  • First semisubmersible for year-round drilling West of the Shetland Islands in more than 4,000 feet of water
  • First deepwater semisubmersibles with patented Tri-Act derrick
  • First ultra-deepwater drillship with patented dual-activity drilling system
  • First oil and gas exploration well drilled in more than 10,000 feet of water
World Records

Transocean holds most of the world records for drilling in the deepest waters. Our ultra-deepwater drillship Dhirubhai Deepwater KG2 set the current world water depth drilling record in 10,0194 feet of water in the India in April 2011 working for Reliance.

Other world records include the first oil and gas exploration well ever drilled in more than 10,000 feet of water, constructed by the Discoverer Deep Seas, the world's deepest subsea wells completed in approximately 9,000 feet of water by the Deepwater Millennium and the world water depth record for a moored rig in 8,951 feet of water by the Deepwater Nautilus.

Transocean GSF Rig 127 Drills Deepest Extended-Reach WellHOUSTON, May 21, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Transocean Inc. (NYSE:RIG) today announced that the Transocean jackup GSF Rig 127 set a world record for the longest extended-reach well ever drilled at 40,320 feet (12,289 meters) MD (measured depth) with a 35,770-foot (10,902-meter) horizontal section. The well was drilled offshore Qatar in 36 days and incident-free. The new record of 7.6 miles is also the first well in the history of offshore drilling that exceeds 40,000 feet (12,191 meters). The well surpasses by approximately 2,000 feet the prior extended-reach record of 38,322 feet (11,680 meters) MD set by another drilling contractor with a land rig drilling at Sakhalin Island earlier this year.
Transocean Inc. and ChevronTexaco Announce New World Water-Depth Drilling Record in 10,011 Feet of Water HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2003--Transocean Inc. (NYSE:RIG) and ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX) today announced that the Transocean drillship Discoverer Deep Seas has set a new world water-depth drilling record by spudding a well in 10,011 feet of water in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The record -- set while constructing ChevronTexaco's Toledo well in Alaminos Canyon block 951 -- marks the first time in the offshore drilling industry's history that a drilling rig has explored for oil and natural gas in more than 10,000 feet of water.
World Record, Moored Rig The Deepwater Nautilus Team set the world water-depth record for an offshore drilling rig operating in moored configuration at 8,951 feet of water in Lloyd block 399 in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico for Shell. The 2004 achievement surpasses the prior world record for a moored rig of 8,717 feet of water set by the Deepwater Nautilus Team in 2003 for Shell in Alaminos Canyon block 857 in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico

Deepwater Drilling

Our drillships and semisubmersibles form the world's largest "floater" fleet and the largest deepwater fleet, working all around the globe. Of these rigs, 29 can operate in water depths of 4,500 feet or greater, and 18 can drill in 7,000 feet of water or more, using the most advanced offshore drilling technology available.

Harsh-Environment Drilling

Transocean has achieved several milestones in harsh-environment drilling, including the first rigs to drill year-round in the Barents Sea and in the deepwaters west of the Shetland Islands. Our harsh-environment fleet serves customers in the Norwegian North Sea, the U.K. North Sea, the Atlantic Frontier and Eastern Canada.
